The Francis Crick Institute will take four years to construct and is scheduled for completion in 2015. It has been designed by HOK working with PLP Architecture.

Work on constructing the shell of the building started in June 2011 and will take about two years to complete.

A further two years will be spent fitting out the interior. This includes installing all the plant and machinery needed to run the building as well as specialist scientific and computing equipment.

Clay soil is used to help restore a bird sanctuary, whilst heavier soil which may contain concrete is cleaned at a washing plant and recycled.

The site is regularly inspected by the Considerate Constructors Scheme. It is described as an 'exemplary site'.

Overall, work is progressing well and the programme is on track.

Laing O'Rourke, the construction firm appointed to do the building works, is committed to being a considerate constructor.

It is working in partnership with The Francis Crick Institute to create training and employment opportunities, support local businesses, liaise with local residents and support the local community where possible.

A construction working group, with Somers Town residents and representatives from local community groups, meets regularly to make sure the opinions of local people are heard and residents are kept up-to-date on the progress of the building.
