Sustainability strategy: energy

We're reducing the energy we use and minimising our carbon emissions.
The exterior of the Crick.

The nature of our research means that our building consumes lots of energy and has higher carbon emissions than a typical office building.

We’ve taken measures to reduce our carbon emissions by buying energy through ‘green’ energy tariffs and we have an energy efficiency programme in place to reduce energy consumption in the building.

50% reduction in carbon emissions by 2030

Our goals

  • 15% reduction in overall annual energy consumption by 2028
  • 50% reduction in carbon emissions by 2030
  • Net zero carbon emissions by 2040

How are we going to do this?

  • Reducing our carbon emissions by upgrading and redeveloping our building and facilities.
  • Setting energy efficiency requirements for new equipment we buy.
  • Making sure that pieces of equipment like autoclaves are placed in stand-by mode when not in use.
  • Increasing ultra-low temperature freezers to from -80C to -70C where possible.
  • Including energy awareness in our lab induction programme.
  • Encouraging everyone to close fume hoods when not in use.
  • Buying timer switches for lab and office equipment.
  • Increasing sharing between labs to reduce the number of new equipment purchases.
