Introduction
My laboratory works on mechanisms of cellular oxygen sensing. We have defined pathways that regulate transcriptional responses to hypoxia by the post-translational hydroxylation of the transcription factor termed hypoxia inducible factor (HIF).
The hydroxylation reaction is catalysed by a series of 'oxygen-splitting' enzymes, whose absolute requirement for molecular oxygen confers sensitivity to hypoxia.
We are interested in the basic biochemistry of these pathways, their impact on human physiology, and their role in disease, particularly tumour hypoxia.
