intro
Postdoctoral career development fellowships provide an opportunity for exceptional, post-PhD clinicians to consolidate their research experience.
Fellows spend one year full-time or two years part-time working within a Crick research group, on a project agreed between the fellow and the Crick group leader.
The fellowships are designed to:
- act as a bridge between PhD training and a postdoctoral fellowship/independent research funding
- provide postdoctoral research experience, mentorship and career development
- create a strong platform for future funding applications, including clinician scientist fellowships
- foster long-term clinical-scientific links and collaborations.
What we offer
For Crick-funded fellows:
- a salary commensurate with the candidate's clinical experience/stage of clinical training (up to, but not including, NHS consultant level)
- research costs
- training, travel and visa support
We also offer a route for clinicians with existing salary support in place, for example through an Academic Clinical Lectureship (ACL), to undertake research at the Crick alongside their current role/lectureship.
Inclusion
We are proud to be a diverse, open, international institute. We welcome and encourage applications from clinicians of all different backgrounds, identities, nationalities and lived experiences.
Crick's inclusion strategyEligibility
We are looking for talented and motivated post-PhD clinicians who are passionate about research and show outstanding potential for continuing a career in academic medicine and research.
At the time of application, candidates are ordinarily expected to:
- hold a research PhD or be in the final stages of PhD thesis submission
- hold a medical, dental or veterinary degree, or related clinical degree
- have held a clinical post following degree qualification
- hold General Medical Council (GMC) registration or equivalent registration (eg GDC, RCVS, or equivalent national registration outside the UK)
- have previous wet or dry lab research experience.
Application routes and timing
Route 1: fully-funded fellowship
This route is for applicants looking for a fully-funded fellowship with salary support.
Funding is available through:
- The Crick
- The Crick in partnership with Rosetrees for clinicians focussing on translational research with the potential to benefit patients
- The Crick in partnership with Kidney Research UK for clinicians focusing on research that will improve earlier diagnosis, prevention or treatment of kidney disease and those at risk of kidney disease
Application submission window: 1 March 2027 to 30 April 2027
Route 2: externally-funded salary support
This route is suited to clinicians who already have salary support in place, for example through an NIHR- or university-funded Academic Clinical Lectureship (ACL), or a similar NHS/university-funded appointment. For ACLs, this route enables continuation of the lectureship alongside research at the Crick.
Applications are open year-round, with a brief closure of the application form between rounds.
