Operations

Our Operations team supports the Crick's researchers to do the best possible science.

Intro

We have opportunities to work in areas ranging from finance and HR to science administration and engineering.

Whether it's providing a modern and robust computing infrastructure, running an efficient procurement system or making sure that laboratory glassware is clean and well stocked, the Operations team works to ensure that those doing science can focus on research.

We have cross-cutting teams such as IT, finance, HR, communications, public engagement and executive support who run many of the Crick's institutional activities.

Keeping a complex building like the Crick's central London home running requires teams such as health and safety, facilities management, security, engineering, waste management and logistics.

Our researchers' day-to-day operational needs are met by dedicated teams on each floor of the Crick building who do everything from arranging travel and diaries, to ensuring that lab spaces have the right equipment and resources.

Also within operations are the people who run the facilities crucial to research. These are the teams responsible for aspects such as building maintenance, sterilising glassware, preparing reagents and culture media, or repairing scientific equipment.

Jean O'Leary

Jean O'Leary, Senior Science Operations Administrator

"I look after the smooth running of a floor’s administrative function, managing a team of administrators who support scientists.

I feel privileged that I’ve had the opportunity to be part of the Crick and to work in such an inspiring building alongside such a vibrant and diverse scientific community.

Working within such an open and friendly environment and supporting scientists from around the world means that every day is different and my role is continually developing and growing."

Zolaine Patel

Zolaine Patel, HR Services Manager

"I manage a team of HR coordinators who are the first point of contact for HR-related queries.

One of my favourite things about working at the Crick is how involved you can get with different pieces of work that interest you, and the opportunities to work with people from outside your direct team.

I was seconded to the Crick for a year from Cancer Research UK and then secured a permanent position here. I have felt supported throughout my career progression from Cancer Research UK to the Crick."

Guy Hallifax

Guy Hallifax, Project Engineer

"My role is to provide engineering support to all occupants of the Crick. So, for example, I spend time talking to scientists and others to achieve optimal conditions in the laboratories and research units.

I like the feeling that I play a role, no matter how small, in advancing scientific discovery.

What gets me out of bed every morning is the variety. I never know what my next project will be, and I try to treat each one as an opportunity to learn something new."

Ron quote

As front of house manager, I work with our reception team and security officers to make sure that our day-to-day building operations run smoothly.

I also coordinate security, logistics and waste services for events when required, and it’s great to see an event go from a brief to a well-executed end result.

I enjoy working with the team to welcome the clients, guests and employees that come through the Crick doors every day.
