Intro
We're committed to running a world-class postdoc training programme.
Our programme is developed in consultation with our postdocs to help them make the most of their time at the Crick and prepare them for their future careers.
There are around 400 postdocs working in the Crick at any one time, making them our largest group of scientists.
Our postdoc training programme
The early weeks
The postdoc induction helps Crick postdocs get up and running as quickly as possible.
It includes an introduction to the Crick and our values and objectives, information about opportunities provided via the postdoc programme, and an overview of activities and networks postdocs can get involved with.
Tracking progress
All Crick postdocs are associated with at least one interest group. These offer weekly internal and external seminars, and the opportunity to present your research. You will also benefit from our wider seminar programmes and the symposia and conferences held at the Crick.
Your progress will be formally reviewed annually with your group leader, and there are opportunities for postdocs to engage more broadly with other Crick faculty.
Training opportunities
We encourage postdocs to be proactive and manage their own training by selecting activities from our broad portfolio that suit their stage, research area and career interests.
This includes scientific skills training via our science technology platforms, scientific computing, programming and software training, writing research papers, fellowship and grant applications, peer review workshops, a range of translation training activities, science communication and outreach.
You can also participate in the summer student programme as a supervisor, which provides training in interviewing, selecting and supervising undergraduate summer students. You will also given access to teaching opportunities organised with our university partners and to various outreach and public engagement activities.
Career development
Our Academic Training team organises regular careers talks, many of which are delivered by Crick alumni, covering scientific careers in academia and industry, as well as other career options such as science publishing, policy, communication and administration.
Postdocs interested in pursuing an academic career can participate in our 'Postdoc to PI' programme which involves talks and workshops to advise and support postdocs as you develop an independent research proposal and apply for independent positions.
You can also access one-to-one CV advice and support to organise short work placements to prepare for your future career.
contracts and salaries
Contracts and salaries
Postdocs are hired on a four-year contract, with a possible extension for up to six years in total.
Some postdocs come to the Crick on shorter fellowships, for example, when supported by external funding for a specific project.
Crick postdocs are funded by four-year Crick postdoctoral fellowships and grants awarded to our group leaders. The postdoc salary scale starts at £40,125, and you can find out more about our salaries and benefits pay and benefits page.
Our postdoc community
Postdocs are one of the most international groups at the Crick – approximately 20% are British, 55% come from EU countries and 25% are from further afield. Two third of postdocs at the Crick are in their first post-PhD position, and one third are on their second postdoc position.
Postdoc Committee
The Crick Postdoc Committee, made up of 26 representatives from across the institute, is at the heart of our postdoc community.
The committee meets regularly to discuss and advise on all matters relating to postdocs including the postdoc training programme, and to organise various academic and social activities, including the annual Crick Postdoc Symposium.
