How to apply: Summer student training programme

Fill in your name in the correct format, capitalising the appropriate letters (e.g. Joe Bloggs instead of joe bloggs), as this will be used in all future correspondence with yourself and your named referees.

If possible please provide a telephone number that we can contact you on if required.

Please tick which of our three widening participation eligibility criteria apply to you. You need to be able to tick at least one of these boxes to be eligible for the programme. Your widening participation eligibility criteria data will be shared with members of the Crick’s academic training team, who operate the programme, but will not be disclosed to the selection panel or your potential supervisor(s). For further information, please see the Who is eligible section of this webpage.

You will be applying for a position on the Crick Summer student training programme and we will ask you to select your preferred supervisors on the application form.

You can apply for up to a maximum of 3 positions on your application form. Therefore, before completing the application form, please read about the supervisors that are recruiting 2023 summer students.

Only those supervisors listed on the 2023 summer student positions   page are recruiting students. You do not need to contact the supervisors to discuss your application before submission.

Please pay particular attention to this section and answer the questions on the form to tell us more about you, your scientific interests and why you want to do a summer placement, paying attention to the maximum word counts.

Please list any relevant work or research experience that you have, either as part of or outside of a university degree course, starting with the most recent. Include details of host lab(s) / employer, the supervisor / manager, dates, brief description of project(s) / responsibilities and, if applicable, your work on the research project(s). Note that you may also include non-science work experience in this section.

Please complete carefully, giving as much information as possible.

In the section on your school please provide information from school/college/high school. Please tell us the name of your high school leaving qualification / certificate, the subjects that you studied for that qualification / certificate, and the grades for individual subjects (or, if relevant, the overall grade) that you achieved.

In the Undergraduate (bachelors) degree section, please select your university from the drop-down list. If you are studying Medicine, please select the university that your medical school is partnered with. Please provide information on each course/module with credits and overall marks/grades in order to give us as complete information as possible about your academic performance to date. Please enter each course/module as a new paragraph.

You will be asked to upload a copy of your CV - this must be a PDF (.pdf) file that is no larger than 2MB.

This section is to provide additional information about yourself and to help us advertise our summer programme in the future.

We will request references from 2 academics / managers who can judge your potential as a summer student. Please select your referees carefully. At least one of these should be an academic who can comment on your performance so far at university, i.e. an academic tutor, lecturer or equivalent. You may also choose to nominate managers from any science or non-science jobs/work experience that you have.

Please note that we do not accept personal references, or references from personal email accounts – please use the university email address for your university referees.

We will not normally make any changes to any referee details after you have submitted your application. Therefore, before you submit your application, please ensure that your referees' contact details, especially their email addresses, are accurate and enter only one email address per referee.

The deadline for reference receipt is Monday 13 February 2023. Your application may be considered if references are not received by the deadline, however, we will not invite any applicants to interview without 2 references in place. It is therefore important that you check - before you submit your application - that your referees will be able and willing to provide a reference within this timeframe.

We will contact your referees by email as soon as you submit your application, asking them to complete an online reference form. When you submit your application please contact your referees to confirm that they have received our reference request email (these emails sometimes get blocked by university security systems or end up in spam folders).

Please help your referees meet this deadline by informing them of your application, checking (before you submit your application) that they are willing and able to provide a reference by the deadline, and by encouraging them to submit their reference soon after receipt of our email. You and your referee will receive an acknowledgement email once each reference has been submitted.

Remember, if you leave your application until the closing date your referees will only have a short time to return your reference.

If I am in the UK on a visa I understand that I may only undertake a summer placement if it complies with the terms of my visa. I understand that if I am ineligible to undertake a summer placement according to the terms of my immigration status, the Crick reserves the right to withdraw my application and/or offer of a place on the Crick summer programme.

I agree that such data may be made available to those who reasonably need to know within the Crick. All data on this application form, apart from the widening participation eligibility criteria and Equal Opportunities data, will be made available to all recruiting supervisors. I understand and agree that this data will either be kept for six months after the end of the selection process or any placement that is offered.

A great deal of medical research at the Crick will be carried out without using animals. In certain areas, however, animal research remains essential. The Crick will only use animals when there is no alternative.
