The role is responsible for a particular quadrant(s) and has line management responsibilities of the Laboratory Operations Assistant(s) on the floor. It is necessary to work closely with the other Quadrant Managers as well as the Floor Managers to deliver laboratory operations across all the science floors. To achieve its objectives the role has a number of key responsibilities including, but not limited to, continuing to develop communal areas as well as primary laboratory and write-up space. Contribute to the procurement of scientific equipment and play a part in developing the operational strategy for the laboratory operations at the Crick. The role is an important link with Group Leaders, Postdocs, Students, Procurement, Finance, Logistics and Infrastructure teams.

Quadrant Manager – Service Delivery

This is a full-time, 12 month fixed-term with the possibility of becoming permanent (could be offered as a secondment) position on Crick terms and conditions of employment.

Summary

There is an opportunity for a full-time, 12 month fixed-term Quadrant Manager to join the Service Delivery Team. The role reports directly to the Hub Lead to support and maintain laboratory operations in a quadrant and throughout the institute.

The role is an important link with Group Leaders, Laboratory Research Scientists (LRSs), Postdocs, Students, Safety, Health and Sustainability (SHS), HR, Procurement, Finance, Logistics and Facilities & Infrastructure (F&I) teams, as well as working closely with other Quadrant Managers.

Key responsibilities

Each floor has approximately 40 research laboratories and associated Science Technology Platforms (STPs), with up to 450 staff.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Support the efficient day to day running of the research laboratories located on the quadrant, including STPs, providing assistance and advice to ensure that all activities within the laboratories comply with Crick policies.
  • Ensure the operations and day-to-day management of the quadrant communal facilities (tissue culture, equipment and cold rooms), including but not limited to upkeep, servicing and repair of equipment, maintaining safety standards.
  • Contribute to lab space planning with the quadrant laboratories e.g. upgrades, refurbishments and repairs including overseeing commissioning of areas in a quadrant, working closely with the Facilities & Infrastructure Team.
  • Managing and supporting the development of the Laboratory Operations Assistants for the quadrant, planning their work and ensuring, where possible, continuity with the rest of the floor and the wider team.
  • Support the Asset Management Team by providing local quadrant knowledge for

service contract agreements and existing warranties for laboratory equipment, including managing surplus/obsolete equipment.

  • Liaise with the Procurement Team to negotiate best costs when purchasing equipment and consumables for the quadrant laboratories.
  • Advise and assist staff with unresolved ordering related issues, working closely with the Finance and Logistics Teams.
  • Ensure Quadrant compliance with Crick’s overall policies and standards for waste and recycling.
  • Offer out-of-hours support for urgent issues affecting the Quadrant and attending site if required.
  • Act as “Person Designated” under the Human Tissue Act – providing local guidance and oversight for the Quadrant.
  • Act as Radiation Protection Supervisor for an area if required.
  • Act as Biological Safety Officer for the Quadrant, raise permits to work for engineers to enter CL2 areas, carry out induction and training of scientists on quadrant SOPs (PPE, disposal of waste, local rules etc).

Key experience and competencies

The post holder should embody and demonstrate our core Crick values: bold, imaginative,

Essential

  • Educated to degree level, or equivalent, in a science discipline or have extensive laboratory management experience.
  • Good knowledge of relevant Health and Safety issues including biological, radiological and chemical safety. Training will be provided as required. (i.e. NEBOSH, IOSH).
  • The post-holder must have a broad understanding and experience of scientific procedures and specialised equipment requirements within a research environment.
  • Wide laboratory experience preferably with some administrative responsibilities.
  • Experience of managing both equipment and consumable budgets.
  • Understands strategic management and operational issues within a research institute.
  • Able to establish good relationships with stakeholders and staff and builds wide and effective networks of contacts inside and outside the organization.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, able to deal confidently and diplomatically with a range of staff at all levels.
  • Advanced Microsoft office IT skills essential and database experience desirable.

Desirable

  • The position requires a good general appreciation of the Crick’s research activities.
  • Experience in dealing with representatives from scientific companies and contractors as well as negotiation with suppliers (desirable).
