The position of FP&A Senior Manager is a key position in the Institute with responsibility for financial planning and reporting for research groups and STPs in the institute and partnering with Science Directors at the Crick. This position may also deputise for the Head of FP&A when required. The FP&A Senior Manager reports to the Head of FP&A and takes the lead for Finance on decision support and business partnering with senior Crick leaders. The role line manages the FP&A Analyst position. The role will lead strategic financial planning, budgeting and forecasting, particularly relating to the primary science-facing functions of the Crick, and be responsible for ensuring that the Crick has the information it needs to support effective decision-making and strategic development. The FP&A Senior Manager is expected to provide significant input to the creation of an FP&A roadmap and contribute to the regular team meetings.

Summary

The position of FP&A Senior Manager is a key position in the Institute with responsibility for financial planning and reporting for research groups and STPs in the institute and partnering with Science Directors at the Crick. This position may also deputise for the Head of FP&A when required.

The FP&A Senior Manager reports to the Head of FP&A and takes the lead for Finance on decision support and business partnering with senior Crick leaders. The role line manages the FP&A Analyst position. The role will lead strategic financial planning, budgeting and forecasting, particularly relating to the primary science-facing functions of the Crick, and be responsible for ensuring that the Crick has the information it needs to support effective decision-making and strategic development. The FP&A Senior Manager is expected to provide significant input to the creation of an FP&A roadmap and contribute to the regular team meetings.

Key responsibilities

These include but are not limited to:

  • Providing accurate information and recommendations on core and grant-funded research and STP spend to the Head of FP&A
  • Support the development of strategic financial plans and models that influence and support decision-making within the Crick
  • Supporting the annual financial planning and budget setting process
  • Supporting Crick leaders and the Head of FP&A in developing and delivering efficiency plans and ensuring value for money across the Crick
  • Partnering with key stakeholders at the Crick, especially the Director of Research and the Director of Science Operations
  • Being responsible for continuous improvements of the recharge process that allocates direct and indirect Science Operations costs to grants and research groups
  • Providing management information across the Crick, including monthly management reporting at all levels and ad hoc reporting. Constantly looking forward ways to develop this information.
  • Developing forward-looking reporting to profile income and costs relating to external grant funding
  • Leading the development of resource allocation and costing models that will support internal management and the needs of grant funders. Developing effective reporting on budget, forecast and actuals and maintaining an up to date impact assessment on costings.
  • Working with the Head of FP&A and the Head of Finance Operations and Control to ensure that month and year–end processes are completed in a timely manner
  • Supporting the Head of FP&A and Head of Post-Award on strategic projects
  • Expected to work in the Crick office for 2-3 days per week

Qualifications, experience and competencies:

  • A qualified accountant with a senior track record in managing FP&A in a complex organisation
  • Well-developed leadership and business partnering skills
  • A senior team player, able to work flexibly with others and contribute effectively across a broad range of activities
  • Able to act credibly and persuade, negotiate and influence at senior level
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, able to engage with people at all levels internally, with partners and externally
  • Experience delivering a financial change management project end-to-end
  • Strong experience of Excel, management reporting and financial modelling

Desirable

Qualifications, experience and competencies:

  • Demonstrable experience of developing and then implementing financial strategies
  • Experience of a research environment, a grant-funded organisation or the NHS
  • Experience of Power BI
