Our work seeks to understand how TGF-b family signalling pathways function normally in early vertebrate development and in adult untransformed tissue culture cells, and how these signalling pathways are perturbed in disease, in particular in cancer and the Marfan-related syndromes. Work in the Hill laboratory exploits the very powerful combination of early vertebrate developmental systems (primarily zebrafish embryos), together with a variety of model tissue culture systems, and mouse cancer models. The group currently comprises ten people – five postdocs, two PhD students, a clinical fellow, a master’s student, and a senior laboratory research scientist. Three of the lab members use zebrafish embryos as a model system, three are using human and mouse ES cell/iPS cell models, whilst the others are concentrating on deregulated TGF-b family signalling in cancer, primarily using mouse models. The lab uses a very wide range of methodologies including developmental and cell biology, cancer biology, next generation sequencing and computational modelling.

The purpose of this role is to follow up on some exciting recent unpublished results where we have been dissecting the function of TGF-b family signalling in breast and pancreatic cancer. The ultimate aim of this work is to discover how best to target these signalling pathways for therapeutic ends and to determine how to combine anti-TGF-b family signalling therapies with other cancer therapies. We have discovered that manipulation of either the SMAD2/3-dependent or SMAD1/5-dependent TGF-b family signalling pathways strongly impacts the tumour immune microenvironment in both breast and pancreatic cancer. We now want to dissect this in detail, elucidate the underlying mechanisms and determine how we can harness these effects for therapeutic ends.
The project will involve working with mouse models of breast and pancreatic cancer (genetically engineered and orthotopic transplantation models), immunophenotyping, tumour staining and imaging. It may also involve collection and analysis of human samples.
Postdoctoral Training Fellows lead their own projects, contribute to other projects on a collaborative basis (both in the lab and with external collaborators) and may guide PhD students in their research. The ability to work in a team is essential.

- PhD in cancer biology or in the final stages of PhD submission
- Good knowledge and hands on experience of working with mouse models of cancer
- Technical expertise in mouse genetics, in vivo mouse experiments and tumour analysis
- Track record of writing papers as evidenced by publications or submitted manuscripts in referred journals
- Evidence of data presentation at scientific meetings
- Strong organisational skills and thorough record-keeping
- Ability to work independently and also in a team
- Experience in cancer immunology
- Experience in signal transduction research
- Experience of working with cancer-associated fibroblasts
