Summary

This is an exciting opportunity to join one of the world’s leading research Institutes at a crucial time in its evolution, and play a definitive role in shaping it for the future.

The Information Technology Office (ITO) team within the Francis Crick Institute is responsible for the design, implementation and operation of all IT applications which manage the running of the institute, along with the publication and library services provided to scientists. Within this team, this role will be responsible for the design of new software services for a variety of different projects within the Crick, relating to Enterprise Resource Planning, Service Management, Data exploitation, Talent acquisition and management, and more.

We are looking for a Business (Process) Architect to join The Crick’s Architecture & Design function. The role that they will perform is a strategic and critical role to help our scientific community become more agile and productive in their technology solutions.

The role will support the scientific community structuring their business with respect to governance, organisation design, business capability, processes, and business information. One of our critical operations systems is WorkDay which has many business and technical interfaces, and we are looking for this Business (Process) Architect to propose major improvements in this and other impacting cross-functional systems.

Key Responsibilities

These include but are not limited to:

  • Defining the current and target operating model.
  • Defining a catalogue of e2e business process maps
  • Evaluate and identify areas for improvement, the required changes, change impacts and intervention areas.
  • Shape and lead the delivery of a cross-functional programme of improvements to drive operational excellence 
  • Managing definition of business benefits and benefits realisation strategy.
  • Aligning organisation structure with business capabilities, business functions and delivery of benefits.
  • Working with and building trusted relationships with multiple stakeholders at all levels.

The Business (Process) Architect will align strategic goals with decisions regarding the organization, its products and services, partners, suppliers, capabilities, and the central business and IT initiatives. The key is to focus on business motivations, operations, and analysis frameworks and on related networks that bridge these aspects of the organization. As a Business (Process) Architect, you would be required to build an integrated view of The Crick using a repeatable approach, consistent framework, and updated tools and techniques.

The Business (Process) Architect will collaborate with the Service Design& Business Analysis team along with other IT functions to align technical solutions with business needs. They will also work with senior leaders and executives on how to leverage business architecture artefacts to devise a strategic business plan aligned with The Crick’s longer-term strategy. Finally, it is the duty of the architect to provide valuable input into the governance cycle that would help achieve enterprise goals and deliver bottom-line business value.

Business (Process) Architect Roles and Responsibilities Include

  • To plan and design a business architecture strategy based on carefully scrutinizing various business scenarios and motivations.
  • To capture the vital views of the organization through a structured business architecture approach is a key business architect role.
  • To illustrate the main business functions of the company and to identify functions that are customer-facing or supplier-related or pertaining to business execution and business management.
  • To identify strategic business goals that can be traced through the organization and be mapped for ongoing governance.
  • To describe strategic, core and support processes that stretch beyond functional and organizational boundaries
  • To define external entities like customers, suppliers, and external systems related to the enterprise.
  • To describe the workforce, resources and controls engaged in the processes.
  • Business (Process) Architect responsibilities also include defining data shared across the business and their interrelation.
  • To establish how roles, capabilities, and business units are related. Thereafter, decomposition of those business units into corresponding subunits

Key experience and competencies

Essential

  • Application of Business Architecture methodologies
  • Drive stakeholder engagement at all levels, including C-level.
  • The ability for teamwork at all levels of the organization.
  • Experience working in multi-functional and complex teams.
  • Relevant professional consulting or advisory experience.
  • Experience leading teams and/or influencing senior stakeholders.
  • A broad view of the business and varied degrees of appreciation for strategies, processes, technologies, and governance.
  • The skill to apply architectural principles to business solutions.
  • Relevant expertise in using model-based representations that can be used to collect, aggregate, or disaggregate complex business information as and when required.
  • The ability to conceptualize and design high-level models that can help in future analysis to remodel the business architecture.
  • Experience in creating business processes with the aid of various tools and techniques.
  • Experience of driving business transformation through enterprise systems

Desirable

  • Exceptional liaison abilities to convey information needs of the business to the IT team and data constraints to the business, similar conveyance capabilities regarding both business and IT strategy, business processes and workflow automation, business as well as IT initiatives, benefit realization, and service delivery.

  • TOGAF certified – or TOGAF aware.
