Work experience project
Part of the Crick's work experience programme. Learn more about work experience.
A science-based work experience placement which runs from 15 February to 17 February 2023.

Research topics
Computational & Systems Biology Genetics & Genomics
Thanks to rapid advances in technology in the last decade, biologists are now able to study individual cells at the molecular level within complex organisms. These technologies (often refered to as Next Generation Sequencing or NGS and single cell sequencing) produce relatively large quantities of data. The processing, analysis and interpretation of these data sets usually involves collaboration between specialists in specific area of biology being investigated and specialists who have the skills required to work with the data.
The successful candidates will work as a team to initially gain an understanding of the technical aspects of analysis of NGS data and later, apply what they have discovered to an analysis of a biological data set. The output will be a brief report summarising their findings.
Some experience with Python programming is essential.
The successful student would ideally be interested biology and computer science.
It is expected that all students accepted for a placement at the Crick are punctual, responsible, show a willingness to learn, listen to advice and act on feedback. For this placement in particular, the student should also:
- Have a good attention to detail
- Inquisitive
- Problem solver
