The Francis Crick institute is a biomedical research institute. Our scientists want to understand more about how living things work to help improve treatment, diagnoses and prevention of human diseases, but none of that would be possible without the people working in Operations roles. Operations are the roles that do things day-to-day to keep the Crick running. This summer we are offering placement in:

  • Our finance team, who use a variety of computer programmes to plan and track the Crick’s spending. Ideal for students thinking of setting up their own business or going on to study business-related courses.

  • Our Philanthropy team, which works across the Crick and Cancer Research UK and aims to help raise significant donations of £100,000 to support the Crick’s work. Ideal for students interested in a broad range of activities including events and fundraising.

  • Our Health and Safety, Human Resources and Learning and Development teams, who look after the people in the building. Ideal for students hoping to go into jobs with people, or people-related courses e.g. psychology.

  • Our Communications and Graphic Design team, who communicate our science externally using our website, news, and social media, including creating visuals and videos including posters and signs. Ideal for students hoping to go into jobs involving media (e.g. news, social media), or design, or into courses related to design/media.

  • Our Service Delivery team, who support with the day-to-day running of the labs, including purchasing supplies for labs, upkeeping lab equipment, and advising on health and safety. Ideal for students who enjoy science and are interested in the business functions that support research.

  • Our Legal team, who provide legal advice and support to the Crick. Ideal for students who want to study law.

  • Our Community Engagement team, who aim to share our science with local people and businesses, including through events e.g. for families. Ideal for students who are interested in event planning or working with people.

Throughout the application, you’ll be able to outline what you are interested in gaining experience in, and we’ll then try to match you to a placement that aligns with your interests/goals for the future. When completing the application, you will be able to select what weeks between the week of 10th July - week of 28th August you would be free to take part in a placement.

In order for us to match you to a placement that suits your interests, before starting this application, have a think about why you want to take part. Do you want to gain specific skills like creating spreadsheets, using Photoshop or learning how to manage events? Do you want to gain transferrable skills like communicating with others, helping people or working in a team? Do you want to use the placement to better understand what you want to study in the future, or what job you might want to do? If any of the specific placements above stand out to you, let us know! If they don't, that's OK too, tell us generally what you're interested in and we'll try to find a placement that fits that.

Please remember when completing this application – the more information you can give us, the more likely we’ll be to be able to match you to a placement!

To be eligible for these placements, you must be aged 14-19 on the first day of the placement, and either attend a state school within the borough of Camden, or live in the borough of Camden and attend a state school elsewhere. More details on our work experience programme can be found on our website here: https://www.crick.ac.uk/careers-study/students/work-experience. Please note: it is not guaranteed you will be matched with a placement this summer.
