Planning application registered

UKCMRI's application to build a world class medical research centre in London has been formally registered with Camden Council. The new institute is planned for the unused land near to St Pancras International station.

The final design proposal incorporates several changes made after two years of consultation. Since 2008, UKCMRI has held more than 70 events to tell local people about the project and ask for their views. More than 500 people have attended.

Modifications to the design included reducing the overall height of the building by locating about one third of it below street level, reshaping the roof to reduce the impact on the local area, and setting part of the building back from the street to create space for a public garden.

Registration of the planning application marks the start of a 21 day public consultation period. The decision on whether the building will go ahead is likely to be made by Camden Council's Development Control Committee before the end of the year. If approved, building works will start in spring 2011.
