Brexit deal statement

Paul Nurse

Sir Paul Nurse

Paul Nurse, Director of the Francis Crick Institute, said: "We’re pleased that a Brexit deal has been agreed, brought about by compromise on both sides.

"We now need to ensure that the present strong research relationships across Europe continue and grow. This is very important – the response to COVID-19 has demonstrated what can be achieved through international collaboration.

"In the coming months, we will be calling on the Government to ensure that the UK immigration system is fit-for-purpose and to review the costs associated with this system, which could be a major deterrent to young and talented scientists who want to make the UK their research home.

"The Crick is an international institute, open and welcoming to scientists and students from around the world. We urge the Government to ensure that its rhetoric is more welcoming and engages the many young people and scientists who were overwhelmingly against Brexit and are critical for the future success of our country."
