Researching the world’s deadliest infectious disease

Join Max Gutierrez, Group Leader at the Crick, as he explains what happens to cells that are infected with tuberculosis and how his lab is studying our bodies’ response to this infection.  

Tuberculosis (TB) is a devastating disease that has affected humans for centuries. Even today, it kills over a million people each year worldwide.  

TB is a curable disease but needs a six-month treatment period with at least three different antibiotics.  

The bacterium that causes tuberculosis, Mycobacterium tuberculosis, infects and lives within our own immune cells. By understanding how this bacterium survives and thrives inside these cells, Max’s lab hopes to find new approaches for treatments that help to eradicate this dangerous disease.  

About Max Gutierrez

Max is the Group Leader of the Host-Pathogen Interactions in Tuberculosis Laboratory. He is a cell biologist originally from Mendoza, Argentina who has been a Principal Group Leader at the Crick since 2018.
