The Francis Crick Institute has appointed Dr Ruth McKernan as a trustee of its Board as the institute moves into its second decade.
Ruth is a neuroscientist whose career has spanned academia, industry and government. During 26 years in the pharmaceutical sector, she led drug discovery programmes in the UK and US, ultimately heading the Pfizer Research Centre in Sandwich. In 2015, she became Chief Executive of Innovate UK, where she helped to create the Government's Industrial Strategy Challenge Fund and led a range of initiatives to support innovation and economic growth.
Ruth has served on numerous boards, including the Medical Research Council, Alzheimer's Research UK, Cancer Research Technology and the US biotechnology company Cerevel. She is currently an Operating Partner at SV Health Investors, where she has co-founded five biotechnology companies.
In 2026, she was elected Vice President of the Academy of Medical Sciences and received the BioIndustry Association's Chiswell Lifetime Achievement Award. She was appointed CBE for services to business and innovation in 2013.
Ruth said: “Over many years working across academia, industry, government and venture investment, I have come to appreciate the value of discovery research organisations like the Crick. Its world-leading scientists are advancing our understanding of biology while creating the foundation for innovations that improve human health and drive economic growth.
“The Crick is a unique national asset and a vital part of the UK's life sciences ecosystem. I am delighted to be joining the Board and look forward to contributing to its next chapter.”
