Petr obtained an MSci in Molecular and Cellular Biology from the University of Glasgow. He then joined the Zador lab at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory for his PhD, where his research was focused on circuit mechanisms of auditory perception and decision-making, supported by the David and Fanny Luke Fellowship.

In 2013, he joined the lab of Thomas Mrsic-Flogel with funding from EMBO and Marie Skłodowska-Curie postdoctoral fellowships, initially at the University of Basel in Switzerland and later at the Sainsbury Wellcome Centre in London. His postdoctoral research focused on how the functional properties of different types of neurons in the visual cortex emerge from the structure of their synaptic connections, as well as how visual signals are transformed across the cortex to guide simple decisions.

In 2020, he started his lab at the Francis Crick Institute, studying how neurons in the visual system help animals navigate in the three-dimensional world, and how their circuits are sculpted during development.
