Rute Machado De Morais Ferreira

Rute has a long-standing interest in pancreatic cancer cell biology, specifically in understanding the cellular events that lead to tumour initiation and progression.

During her PhD, at the London Research Institute UK, with Professor Axel Behrens, Rute has described how the cell of origin impacts the mode of pancreatic cancer progression and discovered a specialized cellular subpopulation in pancreatic ductal adenocarcinomas with stem cell features, responsible for the maintenance and aggressive nature of these tumours.

Rute is currently working as a Postdoctoral Training Fellow within the Tumour-Host Interaction Laboratory lead by Ilaria Malanchi. Building on her previous expertise, Rute’s research is focused on understanding and dissecting the intercellular communications between pancreatic cancer cells and surrounding stroma that support tumour growth and metastatic colonization.
