Veronique Calleja

Visiting Scientist

After obtaining her Ph.D. in 1999 in Molecular and Cellular Biology and Biochemistry at Nice-Sophia Antipolis University, France on: “Mechanisms of retrocontrol of MAPK and FAK signalling pathways”, Veronique started a post-doctoral position as Translational Fellow at ICRF (London Research Institute-LRI) in the laboratories of Prof. Julian Downward and Prof. Nick Lemoine. Her project consisted in assessing the potential for using gene therapy for cancer by targeting the PI3K/PKB/Akt signalling pathway. In 2003, she joined the Cell Biophysics Laboratory led by Prof. Banafshé Larijani at Cancer Research UK (LRI) to study the in situ spatial and temporal regulations of PKB/Akt by PDK1 and to understand PKB/Akt structure-function relationship. For this purpose an interdisciplinary approach combining FRET by Fluorescence Lifetime Imaging Microscopy (FLIM) with classical biochemistry/molecular biology and molecular modelling was used. She is currently working in Prof. Peter Parker’s Laboratory at the Francis Crick Institute. The aim of the project is to understand the molecular mechanisms involved in the gain-of-function triggered by a dominant mutation of PKC alpha found in human chordoid glioma tumours and to study its effect in vivo in a genetically modified mouse model.
