Advanced Sequencing

We use advanced ‘next-generation’ technologies to sequence DNA (and RNA) on a large scale.

We collaborate with labs at the Crick to provide a complete end-to-end sequencing service. We use specialist equipment to determine the precise sequence of four chemical building blocks, called ‘bases’ that make a strand of DNA. It is this sequence of ‘bases’ (A, T, C and G) which encodes the all-important genetic information.

Having the capacity to generate data at high throughput allows researchers in the institute to address fundamental biological questions, for instance by comparing the differential expression of all genes in various conditions or diseases. The data we generate is also used to identify genetic variants causing some types of cancer, or for the worldwide surveillance of the influenza viruses which is key for recommending the most appropriate composition of flu vaccines.

Our facility also includes the Genomics Equipment Park, which provides state-of-the-art molecular biology equipment and specialist expertise to help Crick scientists with genomics research.

 

In the Genomics Equipment Park, we have a wide range of equipment that can be used on a service-basis or by trained Crick scientists.

We carry out DNA/RNA preparation for scientists at the Crick, and provide training and support for researchers to use the other instruments themselves. These include systems that enable us to visualise DNA and protein assay gels, analyse DNA and RNA and evaluate of cell colonies.

All samples prepared in the facility are checked for integrity and quality before Crick scientists start their analysis.

We use advanced liquid-handling systems to simplify many of the procedures that would otherwise be performed routinely on the laboratory bench. This streamlined approach enables Crick scientists to design large-scale projects that rapidly lead to new insights in biomedical research.

We perform routine maintenance and calibration of our equipment to ensure it is accurate and performs to the highest standard.

We update and replace the equipment on a regular basis, actively seeking recommendations from laboratory heads and senior research staff. In this way, we aim to provide a constantly evolving, cutting-edge facility that Crick scientists can use to pursue their research goals.
