Professor Brian Cox's face with a black question mark and scientific items over a purple and orange gradient.

A Question of Science | Can we cure addiction?

Addiction is a complex disease that affects as many as 10 percent of the UK population.

Scientists understand an increasing amount about the brain networks and neurochemicals involved, so why is it proving so hard to find effective treatments, or even cures? Why are some people more susceptible to substance dependence, and how important are environmental factors like the availability of alcohol, cigarettes or drugs?

Join our panel of experts as they explore potential new treatments, from psychedelic therapies that encourage the brain to become more plastic to developments in deep brain stimulation to modify cognitive processes. At the same time, many people living with addiction face the ongoing challenge of maintaining recovery and avoiding relapse. We’ll also hear from someone in recovery from alcohol dependence about how it has affected their life, and the strategies and support they rely on to stay sober.
