Light Microscopy area at the Crick.

Introduction to confocal microscopy

Part of the series of introductory seminars on light microscopy techniques from the Crick Advanced Light Microscopy (CALM) team, running 15 October - 10 November 2019.

The seminar will provide a basic understanding of confocal imaging and highlight some of the advanced techniques available.

Confocal microscopy is a cornerstone of modern fluorescence imaging techniques: utilising a pinhole to exclude out-of-focus light, improve optical resolution and increase contrast in your images. This seminar will provide a basic introduction to the theory of confocal microscopy, how a pinhole creates an optical section and describe how confocal microscopy differs from conventional widefield microscopy. As well as discussing basic image acquisition and multi-dimensional imaging, a selection of advanced imaging techniques available at the Crick will also be highlighted in order to inspire you to expand the limits of your experiments.

Prior attendance at ‘Introduction to Light Microscopy’ is recommended but not essential.
