Course info

This one-day course, held at the Francis Crick Institute in London, provides a practical introduction to ilastik, through a mix of classroom theory and hands-on sessions. It covers the principles of machine learning segmentation and pipeline design to classify and track objects.

ilastik is a free, open-source, and truly user-friendly image analysis tool that helps you leverage machine learning algorithms to easily segment, classify, track, and count your cells or other experimental data. Most operations are interactive, even on large, multi-dimensional datasets. No machine learning expertise is required.

The course is presented by Dominik Kutra, Senior Research Software Engineer from EMBL, and hosted by Stefania Marcotti from the Advanced Light Microscopy facility at the Crick.

By the end of this training, participants will be able to:

  • Summarise the foundations of machine learning segmentation
  • Demonstrate basic use of the ilastik software interface
  • Perform automated pixel- and object-level segmentation
  • Design pipelines to classify and track objects in an image

Participation in this course is application-based. Candidates are required to apply by completing the application form below. In case of over-subscription and multiple applicants from the same labs, we will attempt to distribute the available places evenly.

Applications will be closed on Monday 8 February 2027, and successful candidates will be notified by Friday 26 February 2027. This is a FREE course and open only to staff and students from the Francis Crick Institute and partner universities: Imperial College London, UCL (University College London), and King’s College London.

By applying and/or registering to this course, you acknowledge that you have read, understood, and agreed to the Terms and Conditions.
