This three-day course, held at the Francis Crick Institute in London, is designed to enable researchers to adopt the highest standards when working in a tissue culture laboratory. It is aimed at single and multiuser laboratory managers, cell culture facility managers and lab support teams. 

Mixing classroom-based theory sessions with practical demonstrations in the laboratory, topics covered will include the basics of designing an effective cell culture room, routine quality controls, and the most up-to-date good cell culture techniques. Please note that the laboratory sessions are demonstrations only. Participants will not be performing lab work.

The course has been developed by experts from the Crick’s Cell Science technology platform, which serves as the primary hub for cell lines used within the institute. The team provide a diverse range of services, spanning cell line culture and storage, quality control screening, mycoplasma testing of cell lines, and antibody production. 

By the end of this training, participants will be able to: 

  • Apply principles of Good Cell Culture Practice (GCCP) to maintain high standards of aseptic technique and contamination control
  • Manage the operations of a cell culture room or facility, including workflows, resource allocation, and compliance with health and safety requirements
  • Evaluate basic quality control measures and standards to ensure data integrity and reproducibility in cell-based experiments
  • Design and implement effective training protocols for new users, defining and enforcing minimal competency standards for access to the cell culture facility

Prerequisite knowledge and skills

To attend this course, you must have at least one year of continuous practical experience in culturing eukaryotic cells within a research or commercial setting.
